UM Lighting Project
Quantum Electrical Engineering’s Comprehensive Lighting Study for University of Miami: Enhancing Campus Safety and Aesthetics
Quantum Electrical Engineering Inc. recently conducted an in-depth lighting study for the University of Miami (UM) campus in Coral Gables, Florida, building upon a previous study from 2014. This updated analysis reflects UM’s significant progress in upgrading to LED lighting fixtures, a crucial step towards enhancing campus safety and aesthetics. Quantum’s study, grounded in the 2020 version of the Campus Parking and Shuttle map, aimed to meticulously assess the current lighting situation and offer recommendations for improving light levels and overall campus security.
The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the lighting levels across various campus areas, benchmarking them against the standards set in the University of Miami Building Standards 2017 Edition. These standards mandate a minimum of 1 foot-candle illumination for open parking lots, access areas, and pedestrian walkways from dusk till dawn. Moreover, they specify that the uniformity ratio should not exceed a twelve-to-one ratio, ensuring a balanced distribution of light across the campus. Quantum’s study went a step further by establishing a minimum standard for roadway lighting, setting a benchmark of 1.0 footcandle to ensure comprehensive coverage.
The evaluation revealed a diverse array of lighting fixtures used across campus pathways, including standard Miami fixtures, decorative pole-mounted fixtures, bollards, and building-mounted fixtures. The study found that areas meeting or exceeding the UM Building Standards were satisfactory. However, it also identified zones with less than 1.0 Footcandles, underscoring the need for enhanced lighting in these areas to bolster safety and visibility.
Key insights from the Lighting Study – emphasize the importance of designing exterior lighting
To minimize light pollution and glare, key insights from the study emphasize the importance of designing exterior lighting All exterior lighting fixtures must adhere to full cut-off, horizontal mount, and zero sky pollution standards, with specific BUG (Backlight, Uplight, Glare) ratings. Additionally, the color temperature for parking lots, streets, pathways, and plazas was standardized at 4100K for consistency and optimal visibility. The study also recommends that all lighting projects include photometric studies and independent service meters for new parking lots and campus lighting zones.
Quantum Electrical Engineering’s thorough analysis sets a benchmark for future enhancements in campus lighting. By following strict standards and recommendations, the University of Miami is committed to improving the safety, aesthetics, and functionality of its campus. This initiative will ensure a well-lit, secure, and inviting environment for everyone who visits or studies at UM, fostering a sense of community and well-being.
